The one-time industrial town of Doncaster lies deep in the heart of mining country in South Yorkshire, but since the demise of the coal industry in Britain it has taken on a new lease of life as extensive regeneration has transformed its public face - nowadays the town centre is a thriving commercial hub with many varied retail and leisure options for the first-time visitor.
This, coupled with Doncaster's wide choice of transport links to surrounding regions including the newly opened Robin Hood Airport which it shares with its neighbour Sheffield, means the town is certainly on the up.
Although much of Doncaster's historic (primarily Industrial Revolution era) architecture has been replaced with more modern alternatives, if you travel a little out from the centre there are some gems to be uncovered - there is even a spectacular 12th century castle on the outskirts.
